Feng shui is one of the oldest Chinese aesthetic and metaphysical systems. Essentially, feng shui is a system of interior design that draws upon traditional Chinese folklore with a goal of evoking positive Qi energy. Today, this system is most widely practiced in China and the United States.

Qi energy was originally harnessed by the great martial arts practitioners. Also known by the Sanskrit word prana, Qi energy is created in the heart of the sun, flows through all life, and is responsible for everything that grows and moves.

It is believed that there are two types of Qi. Similarly to electromagnetic energy there is a polarity between positive and negative. If you bring positive Qi into your house, you are assured of success in everything that you do domestically. The chief goal of feng shui is to bring yin (negative) and yang (positive) into perfect balance. You can apply feng shui to your home by aligning and placing into balance items such as doors, windows, and furnishings. Feng shui will teach you how to do this correctly. By working with things in our lived spaces, feng shui is ultimately about bringing harmony into our lives.

In particular, feng shui teaches us that our bedrooms are supposed to be places for resting, sleeping, and relaxing. A feng shui practitioner would advise you to remove everything that gets in the way of this goal; items such as computers, televisions, exercise equipment, and anything related to your work. There must be harmony between the rooms contents and its purpose in order to evoke, most effectively, the positive Qi energy.

Feng shui also recognizes the efficacy of colors in bringing about positive benefits. Some colors, such as red, orange, and yellow have been proven to bring confidence and strength into a room. Other colors such as green and brown evoke sustenance, healing, and nurturing. A feng shui consultant will help you choose the right colors for each room.
